Phrase-cued text is a strategy for teaching reading fluency. Cues, or dashes, are inserted after punctuation marks in order to show students where to pause when reading aloud, and for how long. This helps students improve pacing and expression, becoming more fluent readers:
- Commas - 1 dash - short pause
- Ending punctuation - 2 dashes - long pause
To get started, all you need to do is copy and paste your chosen passage into the text box. You can find many passages on websites such as textproject.org, readworks.org, or commonlit.org. Once you have your PDF downloaded, it's ready to print and use with students.
